Caught between two opposing sides of an armed conflict, campesinos, the farmers of Sumapaz in rural Colombia, have had to face adversity for decades. After the 2016 peace treaty signing between the Colombian state and the FARC-guerilla, things began to improve yet the effects of the conflict are still being felt by many civilians. Campesinos livelihoods are still threatened, as is the strong cultural identity tied to that livelihood. This begs the question; is peace in effect for all of Colombia?

Along with my classmates from Lund University, together we wrote a project proposal which, fictionally, has been approved by the European Commission as part of the course assignment. After hours of discussion and reflections, the decision was to deal with the lack of menstrual health education and accessible menstrual products in the district of Chitwan […]

Av: Alice Castensson och Julian Dannefjord

The United Nations envisions both increased economic growth and effective climate action by the end of this decade. The combination of these is not consistent in the current state of the world. To effectively combat the threat of climate change, we need a shift in the status quo and a different economic structure.

The corona crisis requires global unity

In times of a global crisis, solidarity, humanity and cooperation over borders are more important than ever, writes Josefine Nilsson. Photo: Gerd Altmann/Pixabay

Av: Josefine Nilsson

During these turbulent times, ongoing humanitarian disasters are often overshadowed by the coronavirus. There seems to be a tendency to overlook commitments to international cooperation and assistance. We currently experience this both within the European Union and the United Nations.  The EU failed to answer Italy’s request for assistance at the beginning of the outbreak, […]

The fight for reproductive rights in Mexico

“La Marea Verde” is a women reproductive rights movement that started in 2018 in Argentina. It has spread almost everywhere in the Latin American region, from Santiago de Chile to Mexico City. Photo: Danielle Lupin, Flickr

In 1993, the femicide of 13-year-old Alma Chavira Farel was reported to the police of Ciudad Juarez. This report marked the beginning of an investigation that discovered “Las Muertas de Juarez” (The Dead Women of Juarez) and that brought to light the violence that women suffer in Mexico. This situation incited the women to mobilize […]

Activists are pushing for development alternatives

Many globally established schools of thought, like the Degrowth movement, have their origins in activism. Photo: Jeanne Menjoulet/Flickr

Av: Alexandru Mocanu

“Décroissance!, Décroissance!” This was a slogan that could be heard and seen on the streets of protesting Europe about two decades ago in reaction to the G8 Summit – an intergovernmental forum of the leaders from the most powerful countries. Known in English as Degrowth, it is now one of the major development alternative projects. […]
