Around the world, women build peace through mobilization in civil society. At the same time, we see a global trend of militarized societies and shrinking democratic space. Particularly, women’s rights defenders are constantly being threatened as a consequence of their work, and they face great risks for promoting women’s rights.
Anne Atambo is the President of the Kenyan section of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF Kenya). She is a young women’s rights activist, with experiences of mobilizing women to prevent conflict and promote democracy. She is invited to FUF for an informal talk on the importance of women’s inclusion in building sustainable peace, and will discuss effective and creative ways to do so. Anne will share learnings from using social media as a peace tool, and how this led to the start of the podcast ”Kenyan Women’s Voices”.
Helena Bjuremalm, Deputy Head of Unit for Democracy and Human Rights at Sida, will moderate the talk. The event is organized by FUF and the Swedish section of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (IKFF). The seminar will be filmed and uploaded to our YouTube channel FUFplay.

Anne Atambo is the President of the Kenyan section of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF Kenya). Anne is a women’s rights activist who believes women in Africa are the key to reshaping the future of Africa. WILPF Kenya aims to reach women and girls in vulnerable communities to increase their participation in financial literacy, environmental sustainability, and civic education. Anne desires to see more African women like herself have access to opportunities that can lead to self-actualization and freedom. She therefore started the Kenyan Women’s Voices, a podcast that focuses on what it means to be a Kenyan woman. The podcast is currently being served as an information point for women to get insights on how they can be more aware of their rights, capabilities, and potentials.
