Irene works with a focus on empowering women in Uganda and her work has ranged from women economic empowerment, ending violence against women, HIV prevention and care, amplifying community voices, youth participation and including the private sector for sustainable food systems. How has she worked to include and empower women and youth in her projects? Why is it important and what can we learn from her experiences?

Irene Naikaali Ssentongo is a program management specialist with over 15 years’ senior level experience managing Gender Focused Community Led Development programs. During the past 5 years of her work with The Hunger Project Uganda, Irene has mobilized and supported capacity building efforts to amplify community voices and leadership around issues concerning hunger and poverty, tapping into the power of women and Youth as key change agents as well as continuously engaged with the Private sector to cause transformative changes in the entire food systems chain. Prior to joining The Hunger Project, Irene served in various capacities at DSW Uganda (Deutsch Stiftung Weltbevoelkerung, Uganda Episcopal Conference and Catholic Relief Services. Her role in these senior positions was to provide strategic leadership and management of country programs with focus on adolescent sexual and reproductive health, ending violence against women, women participation and representation, women economic empowerment and HIV prevention, management and care.
