Following this month’s theme at FUF-Lund on Activism and Development, we collaborate with Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET) to host a lecture with Shripad Dharmadhikary who was a full-time activist for 12 years in Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) with his main interest being water and policies around it.
NBA, founded by the Swedish Rights Livelihood Award winner Indian social activist Medha Patkar, is a social movement that’s lead by tribal groups (adivasis), farmers, environmental and human rights activists against the construction of large dam projects at the Narmada river in central and west Indian (Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra).
Shripad Dharmadhikary, currently, is the coordinator of Manthan Adhyayan Kendra, which specializes in water issues, like alternatives to privatization, analysis for future water needs and how various projects affect people’s lives. The lecture will include an introduction to Narmada conflict and Shripad’s experiences as an activist in India. We intend to provide an interactive lecture that promotes discussion, thereby participants are encouraged to ask questions and bring out arguments.
