What can civil society teach states?

Of: Kajsa Fernström Nåtby

At this year's UN climate conference COP23, the host country Fiji tried a new concept called The Open Dialogue which allowed civil society and states to meet. With that being categorized as new concept, it is safe to say that there is room for improvement when it comes to the inclusion of civil society in […]

Vendela Permats Hammarbäck in #Bordeaux #France Vendela Permats Hammarbäck in #Bordeaux #France The French government's decision to raise the retirement age without going through the National Assembly has led to protests and demonstrations throughout the country, and two-thirds of the population is against the reform. Emmanuel Macron's government has decided to raise the retirement age in France from 62 to 64. The decision was made by using Article 49 of the French constitution - which allows bills to be passed without a vote in the National Assembly. This has sparked controversy and opposition from both political opponents and unions, who claim the decision is undemocratic. However, Macron claims that the reform is necessary to avoid labor shortages and to be able to finance an aging population and a large number of pensioners in the country. The controversy highlights the global trend to raise the retirement age due to longer life expectancy. Amanda Rossling in #London #England Recently prese Amanda Rossling in #London #England Recently, the UK and the EU presented a new agreement regarding the Northern Ireland Protocol, which forms part of the exit agreement after Brexit. The new framework should simplify trade in the UK and avoid political tensions between Ireland and Northern Ireland. The framework is described as the beginning of a new chapter in the relationship between the EU and Great Britain. In the same vein, attention was also paid to the 25th anniversary of the so-called Good Friday election - which was established in 1998 and managed to end the 30-year wave of violence in Northern Ireland. Signe Andersson in #Wollongong #Australia I cent Signe Andersson in #Wollongong #Australia In central Wollongong is the Illawarra Aboriginal Corporation (IAC), an Aboriginal non-profit organization that works to strengthen the rights and opportunities of indigenous peoples in Australia. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the indigenous groups who have lived in and farmed the land for over 65 years. When the British colonized Australia, indigenous peoples were persecuted, and discrimination still occurs today, leading to diminished living conditions and opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. IAC works, among other things, to help the indigenous people with housing, as homelessness is a major problem affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Image 000 depicts the official IAC artwork that represents the organization as a whole, connected by different programs, perspectives, people and community. Through this, the organization works together towards a common goal: to improve the lives of Aboriginal people in the Illawarra region. IAC's vision is to live in a just, united and caring society, where indigenous peoples have strong cultural opportunities and are recognized and respected as the first peoples of the land. At www.fuf.se/magasin you can read more about the indigenous peoples in Australia and the referendum on increased political influence for the indigenous peoples that will be held in the country this autumn. #fufcorrespondents

Photo 2: "I woke up at five in the morning, mom told me we had to leave home," says 15-year-old Yana Pasechniuk, one of the students at the educational center. She and classmate Vasilina Tarasova both had to flee from Russian occupiers in Sumy and Kherson. Vilma Ellemark in #BuenosAires #Argentina “Spring Vilma Ellemark in #BuenosAires #Argentina “Our fight has no expiration date.” "Love was stronger than hate." These are some of the messages seen in Mayo Square in Buenos Aires in connection with the @madresdeplazademayo weekly Thursday protest. A total of 2343 times, these mothers, and now sometimes siblings, have been here to search for answers for their children who disappeared during the military dictatorship from 1976 to 1983 - and to bring those responsible to justice. Enforced disappearances are a terror strategy used by authoritarian regimes to silence political opposition, according to Amnesty International. Armed forces abduct people who oppose the regime and then refuse to tell relatives where they are being taken or what will happen to them next. Many are tortured, murdered and dumped without informing the families and without the bodies being returned for a dignified end. In Argentina, between 20 and 000 people are estimated to have disappeared during the military dictatorship and many have not yet been found. The Mothers of Mayo Square were one of the first large groups to organize against the Argentine military regime. The first protest was held on April 30, 000, and to this day they continue to protest every Thursday against various social problems in the country. Video 30: The protest march in Plaza de Mayo. Mothers and siblings wear the diapers of the missing children as white cloths on their heads with the text "living return". Picture 1977: Two mothers in the speaker's tent after the protest march. Vilma Ellemark in #Latin America Hello! My name is Vilma Ellemark in #Latin America Hello! My name is Vilma and I am one of this spring's FUF correspondents. I have just completed my bachelor's degree in political science and am currently transiting through Latin America awaiting acceptance for further journalism studies. Latin America is an incredibly exciting continent where politics is constantly in motion and where people are not afraid to raise their voices. There are many strong grassroots movements here that in new and creative ways drive forward the fight for, among other things, the environment, women's and indigenous people's rights. In the picture you see me and Félix Díaz fighting for the land rights of the indigenous Qom people in northern Argentina. More on this and much more to come! #fufcorrespondents
