Thank you for following our Almedalen reporting. Thank you for following our Almedalen reporting last week! You can find the daily summaries at fuf.se/magasin
🌅 The last day of Almedalen was quiet – but... 🌅 The last day of Almedalen was quiet – but the reflections were all the heavier. 🎤 Nooshi Dadgostar (V) and Ebba Busch (KD) took the stage with strong words about the world situation. Both raised Ukraine, Gaza. Dadgostar talked about international law, warned of the rise of tyranny and defended the rights of small states in a threatening world while Busch talked about a shaky security situation and the importance of military buildup. 🎪 At the same time, after the week we can see that there have been more closed rooms and fewer civil society actors in place. 🗣️ Perhaps that is precisely what will be the conclusion after this week: democracy cannot be taken for granted. It is not only about what is said from the stages – but also about who is allowed to be in the room. 👉 Read all our summaries from the Almedalen Days at fuf.se/magasin Image 1: Almedalen Image 2: The final day was also KD's and V's party day in Almedalen. 📍 FUF in Almedalen – Thursday's intelligence 🌍 International issues were given a lot of space in yesterday's seminars – even though the party leader's speech focused mostly on domestic politics. We heard Magdalena Andersson (S) talk about the security situation and the situation in Gaza, while Elisabeth Svantesson (M) focused on the impact of the war on the Swedish economy. 💬 🤝 At the same time, Sweden's role in the world was discussed – and what happens when aid decreases. UNHCR and @lakarmissionen testified about children dying of cholera and schools being bombed, and civil society called for a long-term approach and responsibility. 🇸🇸🌐 🤖 AI in aid? It was also tested – with both opportunities and warnings. The technology can increase efficiency, but also reinforce inequality if used without thought. 🕊️ The Middle East remained in focus. Experts discussed a new geopolitical world order – and called for more responsibility from the EU on the issue of Israel and Palestine. 💬 And then we talked about young commitment! “Young people care – but in new ways,” said Shaden el Seedi from WWF Youth. Social media, campaigns and hope for change are driving the movement forward. ✊🌱 👉 Read more at fuf.se/magasin and follow us for daily updates from Almedalen! On Wednesday, there was a discussion about how climate threats, military On Wednesday, the discussion focused on how climate threats, military buildups and reduced aid are connected. 💬 “Diplomacy is more important than deterrence,” said Robert Egnell of the Swedish National Defence University. 💬 “Prevention is better than cure,” said Ulrika Modéer of the Red Cross. At the same time, the government wants to finance defense by reducing aid, something that has met with harsh criticism. In particular, the withdrawn support for UNRWA was criticized by Amanda Lind (MP): 📢 “The government must resume support for UNRWA and stop undermining Sweden as a voice for human rights.” 🔗 Climate and security are two interconnected threats. Gabriella Irsten from Svenska Freds warned: ➡️ Climate change drives conflicts. ➡️ War destroys the climate. ➡️ The military is exempt from environmental requirements – despite enormous emissions. 👉 Read more at fuf.se/magasin and follow us for daily updates from Almedalen! 🔹 Simona Mohamsson became the new party leader for Lib 🔹 Simona Mohamsson became the new party leader of the Liberals – and gave the first party leader's speech of the year. Global focus? Almost non-existent – but the EU's role as a democratic superpower was highlighted. 📢 "When the Middle East is burning... now is when we need a Europe that will take a step forward." The speech of the Sweden Democrats party leader Jimmie Åkesson was about how global crises affect Sweden, and about the need for a strong defense against external threats such as Islamism, terrorism and uncertain world politics. 🔹 Sida was back on the Almedal stage! The theme? Future aid. The focus was on strengthening local actors, defending humanitarian law and ensuring that aid is needs-driven – not political. 📌 In addition, Sida's Director General Jakob Granit gave his perspective on the recent criticism directed at the government's decision to stop support for UNRWA - in violation of Sida's own recommendations. 🇺🇦 Ukraine and democracy in focus at Almedal 🇺🇦 Ukraine and democracy in focus on the first day of Almedalen. Almedalen Week 2025 is underway and FUF is in place! The first day was marked by Russia's war in Ukraine - with a focus on humanitarian aid, peace, democracy and reconstruction. 🕊️ Democracy and human rights were also highlighted, including during the opening ceremony where human rights lawyer Hanna Gerdes reminded us of our responsibility: 💬 "We cannot wait for a hero - we must act ourselves.
