The protests in Iran: Lecture with Iranian journalist Mahdieh Golroo

FUF's local group in Uppsala invites you to a lecture about the situation in Iran with the journalist Mahdieh Golroo!

Mahdieh Golroo will talk about what is happening in Iran right now - the protests against the Islamic regime and the fight for women's rights - as well as her own history and experiences as an Iranian journalist and women's rights activist.

Date and time: 30 November 2022 at 17.00-18.00. Between At 17.00 and 17.30 there is a lecture, followed by a question and answer session. The lecture will be held in English.

Place: The lecture will be shown on screen from the Gamla Torget campus, Östra Ågatan 19 in Uppsala. Lecturer Mahdieh Golroo will participate digitally via Zoom. There is also the option for others to participate digitally via Zoom. You sign up here for both physical and digital participation. FUF Uppsala offers coffee. Hope we see you there!  

About the lecturer

Mahdieh Golroo is an Iranian journalist and advocate for women's rights. Her writing focuses on women's oppression and experiences of captivity, democracy and the right to education. Golroo studied economic development at Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran in 2007, but was prevented from completing his studies at because of her involvement in student organizations and publications. In 2010, she was awarded the MESA Academic Freedom Award for the creation of the organization Rate for the protection of the right to education, which supports students' right to engage in peaceful activism and the right to freedom of expression. 

Golroo has previously been arrested in Iran as a result of her peaceful participation in protests for democracy and women's right to education. In 2020, she was offered sanctuary for writers in Sandviken. She has continued to be active in the debate for women's rights in Iran. Here can you read more about Mahdieh Golroo.  

About the protests in Iran

Since Mahsa Amini's death in early September 2022, a regime-critical protest wave for women's rights has spread across Iran. Amini was a 22-year-old woman who was arrested by the morality police for violating the regime's rules to cover her hair with a hijab, and she later died in hospital. According to several human rights organizations, thousands of people have been imprisoned and hundreds have died in connection with the protests in the country.

FUF Uppsala is a non-profit local group and part of the Association for Development Issues (FUF) – a politically and religiously independent organization that works to spread knowledge about global development issues. The local group consists of students in Uppsala who want to increase their own and others' knowledge of global challenges and injustices in the world through debate, conversation and new meetings.

FUF Uppsala invites you to a seminar with Mahdieh Golroo about the situation in Iran!

Mahdieh Golroo will talk about what is happening in Iran right now, the protests against the Islamic regime and the fight for women's rights, as well as her own history and experiences as a journalist and women's rights fighter.

Date and time: 30 November 2022 at 17.00-18.00. The seminar will last between 17-18, of which 30 minutes will be devoted to the lecture and the remaining 30 minutes will be devoted to questions. The seminar will be held in English. 

Square: The seminar will be screened from Gamla Torget campus, Östra Ågatan 19 in Uppsala. Mahdieh Golroo will join though Zoom. There is also the option to participate digitally through Zoom. About the lecturer

Mahdieh Golroo is an Iranian journalist and women's rights activist. Her writing focuses on the experiences of women in prison and oppression, as well as issues of democracy and development. Golroo was a student in Development Economics at Allameh Tabataba'i University in Tehran. In 2007, she was banned from finishing her studies due to her activism in university organizations and student publications that were banned by Iranian government authorities. In 2010, she was awarded the MESA Academic Freedom Award thanks to her engagement and creation of the Council for the Defense of the Right to Education, for students' rights to participate in activism and freedom of speech.

Golroo has earlier been arrested due to her participation in friendly protests for women's right to education and democracy. In 2020, she was granted sanctuary as a writer in Sandviken. The protests in Iran

Following the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022, protests erupted in defense of women's rights in Iran and people all over the country have mobilized against the government. Amini was a 22-year-old woman who was detained by the morality police for allegedly breaking the regime's rules on hijab, and she later passed in the hospital. According to several human rights organizations, thousands of people have been detained and hundreds have died during the ongoing protests.
