Panel discussion: Abortion rights in Asia

The right to a safe and legal abortion is far from obvious today, and in some parts of the world the trend is going backwards. About 95 percent of all unsafe abortions are carried out in Latin America, Africa and South and West Asia, according to Doctors Without Borders.

On December 12 at At 17.30:24 p.m., FUF's local group Stockholm Södra invites you to a panel discussion where we give an overview of the legislation around abortion in Asia and how it has developed. For example, the Supreme Court in India decided this year that all women, regardless of marital status and caste, have the right to an abortion up to and including week XNUMX. At the same time, we see that countries such as the Philippines have a total ban on abortions. There, both the woman who has an abortion and the person who performs the abortion can be punished with up to six years in prison.

How do faith-based actors work with sexual health and reproductive rights in the region? How does civil society work with restrictive abortion legislation? And why do abortion laws look the way they do in Asia? These are some of the questions that will be answered during the panel discussion.

Panelists

Christina Castell, sexual policy expert at RFSU's international unit.
Emilie Weiderud, policy advisor at Act Swedish Church and recently returned from the region.
Amanda Cleeve, postdoctoral fellow in global sexual and reproductive health, former consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva with a focus on abortion research and WHO guidelines for abortion care.
