The outside world must react when countries fail

This week's debaters have focused on the whole world when the Davos summit ends and Venezuela enters political turmoil. At the same time, the political situation in Turkey is being discussed. Although the debaters are based on different continents, they agree that the outside world must react and take responsibility for human rights and democracy.

This week, Venezuela is in the center after opposition leader Juan Guaidó challenged incumbent Nicolás Maduro for the presidency. Ingvar Persson writes in Aftonbladet that what is needed to secure democracy in Venezuela is to solve the social and economic problems that prevail. At the same time, he believes that the EU's call for free elections is the reasonable solution at present. In Expressen, the editorial staff writes that the outside world must put pressure on Maduro to resign voluntarily - otherwise there is a risk that the country will sink into a deeper down-economic crisis.

At the same time, the World Economic Forum in Davos ended. In connection with this, Jonas Ludvigsson points out on SVT's opinion page that the meeting did not pay enough attention to child health. He believes that the WEF could play a much more central role in the work on Agenda 2030: "Until next year, I hope for more discussions about children, and especially two of the UN's 2030 goals: Good health (access to vaccinations) and the right not to be hungry ", he writes.

Finally, twelve article writers on SVT's opinion page highlight Turkey's violations of the European Convention on Human Rights and believe that international pressure is the only thing that can make Erdogan respect the convention. Among other things, they call on Margot Wallström, together with other foreign ministers within the EU, to visit political prisoners in Turkish prisons.
