2024 FUF award winner Josephine Sundqvist on fair development

Josephine Sundqvist is awarded the FUF prize in 2024 because, through her efforts in both academia, civil society and the world of authorities, she has contributed to improving the living conditions of people living in poverty and oppression. Her ability to convey important knowledge about global issues, and her innovative ideas, have inspired Swedish actors to take responsibility in their international engagements. Josephine is a role model not least for young people who want to make a difference in the world.

Josephine Sundqvist works as general secretary for the Medical Mission. Before that, she has also worked at ACT Church of Sweden and Sida, as well as researched about the role of faith-based organizations in aid and development work at Uppsala University.

During the government's work with the reform agenda, Josephine has been a leading voice in the work to ensure that Sweden continues to live up to international agreements and that Sweden maintains a strong and active civil society that works to improve living conditions worldwide.

- Hello Josephine! How does it feel to have been awarded the FUF prize?

Being awarded the FUF award is a great honor. FUF is a significant player in Sweden's development cooperation for which I have great respect. To be called a role model for the young generation is deeply moving. I invest a lot of time and energy in leadership training and coaching young talent, as well as in lowering thresholds and opening doors for the new generation in our industry. This award confirms that my efforts make a difference.

- What are your hopes and fears regarding the development that we see in the world?

With the global crises we face, it takes courage to act. Sweden must regain its strong global position and believe in the central role we can play, especially in normative dialogue work. I am hopeful that we can turn the tide through bold steps in the green and digital transformation.

- What does the work for the work against poverty and oppression need to look like in the future?

To effectively fight poverty and oppression, we must continue to draw attention to forgotten conflicts such as those in Sudan, Chad, Yemen and the DR Congo. It is crucial to strengthen ownership and local leadership in local communities. We must also understand the importance of moral duty bearers and normative dialogue work. In addition, we need to strengthen relations between the Global South and North. In order for this work to be effective, we must dare to invest in the Swedish resource base to support these efforts.
