Agriculture and the Future: Sustainable Practices and Global Supply

FUF's local group Uppsala invites you to a panel discussion on global challenges linked to industrial and large-scale agriculture as well as small-scale and alternative agriculture.

The conversation will touch on different areas within the agricultural industry based on a sustainability perspective where both the social, economic and ecological aspects are highlighted. What are the strengths and weaknesses of each technology and what significance does it have for our common environment and future?

In honor of the evening, FUF Uppsala has invited speakers from different backgrounds who in one way or another work with these issues to create a deeper understanding of the impact of agriculture locally and globally.

About the panelists
  • The researcher Malin Beckman works with rural development at SLU. Her research focuses primarily on agriculture and forestry in Thailand and Vietnam.  
  • Caroline Andersson is doing his doctorate at SLU and doing his thesis on gender and urban farming in Rwanda.  
  • Gloria Jimwaga is expert and policy advisor for soil, seeds and food at Afrikagruppera.
  • Max and William Whitman runs the association Ultuna Permakultur, which works with urban self-sufficiency with a holistic focus.
  • Ann-Helen Meyer von Bremen is a journalist with a strong focus on food, agriculture and the environment. She also works on a non-profit basis for the REKO rings in Uppsala, which is a trading place without an intermediary for producer and consumer.

About the organizer

FUF Uppsala is a non-profit local group and part of the Association for Development Issues (FUF) - a politically and religiously independent organization that works to spread knowledge about global development issues. The local group consists of students in Uppsala who want to increase their own and others' knowledge of global challenges and injustices. In the past, FUF's local group in Uppsala has organized lectures and film screenings about, for example, the protests in Iran, climate change in Latin America, what it's like to have an internship at the United Nations and about the criminalization of women's bodies through the abolition of the right to abortion.

The conversation will touch upon different areas within agribusiness from a sustainability perspective where both the economic, social, and ecological aspects are taken into consideration. What are the strengths and weaknesses connected to respective techniques and what consequences do they imply on our common environment and future?

The panelists come from different academic and professional backgrounds but are all well engaged in these issues specifically. The aim with the evening is to deepen our understanding of the local and global impacts caused by the agriculture system.

About the panelists
  • Malin Beckman is a researcher working with urban and rural development at SLU. Her research is mainly focused on agriculture and forestry in Thailand and Vietnam.
  • Caroline Andersson is a PhD student at SLU. Her dissertation focuses on gender and urban- and peri-urban agriculture in Rwanda.
  • Gloria Jimwaga is an expert and policy advisor regarding land, seeds and food at the African groups.
  • Max and William Whitman are founders of the Ultuna Permaculture Garden whose work focuses on urban self-sufficiency with a holistic approach.
  • Ann-Helen Meyer von Bremen is a journalist mainly working with food-, agricultural and environmental related issues. Moreover, she is voluntarily engaged in REKO marketing in Uppsala.
