From emissions to insight: AW on climate rhetoric

Swedes are well aware of the climate crisis and its consequences. A majority of the population wants the government to pursue a more effective climate policy, and more people than ever are prepared to make changes towards a more climate-conscious lifestyle. At the same time, Sweden has among the highest emissions per capita in the world. Many Swedes do things that harm the climate all the time – we fly “to the sun”, eat meat and buy new clothes.

For many, this reality creates a tricky balancing act. Does the responsibility fall on the “system”, the individual or both, and do all individuals have the same opportunity or responsibility to make a change? Maria Wolrath-Söderberg is an associate professor of rhetoric and, together with Nina Wormbs, professor of the history of technology, has researched how people who are aware of the climate crisis, but who still make climate-damaging decisions, reason. How do they debate with themselves? And what drives the people who have actually implemented major lifestyle changes for the climate?

FUF welcomes you to an AW with Maria Wolrath Söderberg, where we unravel issues of climate and communication. How can an organization or association think to communicate individual responsibility, but not blame? What tools can you use to have pleasant and effective climate conversations with family, friends or colleagues? How do we talk about the climate issue as something that both the state, companies and citizens do together?

We welcome you to mingle from 17:30 PM. At 18 PM, the event will start with a conversation between Maria Wolrath-Söderberg and Julia Carlzon (see below). After that, there will be plenty of time for questions from the audience. After the event, everyone is still welcome to mingle at Källarbyn in Gamla stan, Stockholm.
