The 59th edition of Almedalen Week - the world's largest democratic meeting place for social issues - is coming to an end. It was a record year, despite a shortened week, with more than 3200 program items and 1900 organizers in five days - which is partly due to the fact that it is an election year.

The final negotiations on the EU's new migration pact have now begun. If the proposal for “return hubs” becomes a reality, migrants could be deprived of their liberty och sent to migration centers in countries outside the EU awaiting deportation. Critics warn that the rule of law and human rights are at risk of being disregarded.

Around the same time as the world marked International Women's Day, a report was released showing how EU funds have gone to 270 actors working against gender equality and the rights of LGBTQI people and women. Lack of knowledge about the anti-gender movement is a threat, say the report's authors and Centre Party MEP Abir al-Sahlani.

This year's foreign policy declaration prioritizes security over sustainable development. Cooperation within the EU, the Nordic countries and the Baltic states is highlighted, while dependence on the US is to be reduced. International partnerships are prioritized based on trade and security interests, and humanitarian aid is given greater space than long-term development cooperation.
